Are you looking forward to playing games on the Sony PlayStation 5? If you answered yes to that question, then you’ve probably been keeping an eye out for subtle hints or signs of an impending release. The PS5 is going to be one of the most anticipated video game consoles in years and we’re already seeing hints of what gamers can expect from the new system. Most recently, Best Buy confirmed that it will have a massive restock of the PlayStation 4 coming this week. For those who don’t know, PS4 has a small but loyal group of retailers who stock their systems directly from Sony. These are called Official PlayStation Stores and they sell several game-related products alongside the console itself. Some shops are much bigger than others and have exclusive deals with particular developers. The vast majority sell regular copies of every single game in stock at any given time as well as various accessories and bundles. This week alone we’ll see Best Buy release 1 billion units, Walmart launch its own Nurok e-Sports competition, and Target pick up some pre-orders for the PS5. But before you get too excited about all these announcements, keep in mind that there’s also a lot more to come this week. Let’s break down what we know so far!
Best Buy is Getting a PS5 Restock This Week
bestbuy.com The Official PlayStation Store is one of the most popular places to shop for games on the internet. So it’s no surprise that Best Buy is planning a massive restock of the PS4 this week. The system will be available for a limited time only, from Wednesday, August 24th to Sunday, August 28th. At this time, customers will be able to purchase a new system or a bundle that includes a Dualshock 4 controller as well as a few games. These will all be available at either Best Buy or online retailers. So, if you’re looking for a cheap way to test drive the new system or want to stock up on consoles and accessories before they’re sold out, this week is a good time to shop. You’ll find plenty of deals on various consoles, including the new PS4 Pro. These systems are currently $100 off and there are plenty of deals on bundles as well.
Walmart Launches its own e-Sports Competitions
eSports has exploded over the last few years and there’s no sign of it slowing down. Major sporting events like the NBA, NFL, and UEFA Champions League are all currently hosting eSport contests and viewership is on the rise. The popularity of eSport has made its way into the public consciousness and there are now plenty of competitions and events that are purely based on competitive gaming. Some of the most popular events right now are League of Legends, Dota 2, Counter-Strike, and H1Z1. These games are incredibly spectator-friendly and easy to start playing in the middle of a grocery store or gas station. These games are also free to play and easy to pick up and play, which means there’s a lot of potentials for non-gamers to get involved and enjoy the games, too.
Target Gets Into the Nurok-Gaming Business
target.com For many, a trip to the local Target is one of the most relaxing experiences they have. Target’s Nurok line of gaming systems is an affordable way for non-gamers to try out the latest and greatest in gaming. Target’s line of systems is always pretty good, but it’s especially good right now. There have been several big releases in the last few months and the Nurok line just got a refresh. This system is essentially a cheaper, less capable version of the Xbox One. You can expect it to do most of the same things as the Xbox One, but for a fraction of the cost. There are currently three Nurok models available: the Classic, Junior, and Deluxe. The Junior is the cheapest of the bunch at $159 while the Deluxe model goes for $199. All three models support online gaming, have a 4K display, and a dual-core processor. They also feature a built-in free-to-air (i.e. broadcast) TV tuner as well as built-in wireless headphones and speaker.
Sony Confirms it’s Working on a Next-Gen Console
sony.com So far, we’ve only seen subtle hints about what’s coming next from Sony. But now the company has confirmed it’s working on a next-gen system. In a recent interview with gaming website Game Informer, Sony’s SVP of Entertainment Studios, John Smedley, said, “We haven’t abandoned the current-generation console business. We have a development team that is focused on the next generation.” While Smedley didn’t elaborate on what the next-gen system might look like, it’s easy to assume that it will be another PlayStation. Sony has not yet announced when we can expect to see the next-gen system, but we can expect to hear more about it soon.
And More Pins to Come!
psncharts We’re still a little over a month away from the release of the PlayStation 5 and there are still a lot of details we don’t know. We know the system itself will be massive and have multiple arguable capabilities. But what will be even more amazing is the variety of releases coming up in the next few months. In the next few months, Best Buy will release a steady stream of the new PS4 and other Sony systems. Walmart will start its e-Sports competition, the Nurok initiative. Target will start its Nurok campaign and more. There are still a lot of announcements to come and there’s still a lot to be excited about with the PS5. What’s more, many of the titles coming up are exclusive to the system and won’t be available on any other platform for some time.
